Belgrade New Year’s Eve with fireworks

Belgrade started the year 2012 with a fireworks display over the Ada bridge, the bridge’s opening. The Ada bridge (Serbian: Мост на Ади/Most na Adi) is a cable-stayed bridge over the Sava river in Belgrade, Serbia. The bridge crosses the tip of Ada Ciganlija island, connecting the municipalities of Čukarica and Novi Beograd. The bridge pylon is located on the tip of the island which has been reinforced with large amounts of concrete and has been slightly enlarged to provide stronger foundations. The bridge is the longest single-pylon cable-stayed bridge in the world.

The construction began in 2008 and the bridge opened on 31 December 2011. The fifth episode of the ninth season of the Discovery Channel documentary television series Extreme Engineering was on Ada Bridge.
